Houstonian Patrick Reed Wins 2018 Masters Tournament
Houston resident Patrick Reed drained a par on the final hole to win the 2018 Master by one stroke. UT golfer wins amateur title.

AUGUSTA, GA — Patrick Reed nearly sank a dramatic 75-foot putt for a birdie on the 18th green to win the Master's on Sunday. The long put that he barely tapped sailed quickly downhill and rimmed the cup, stopping just a few feet away. Reed, who lives in Spring, then sank the ball for par on the tournament's final stroke of the weekend to seal his first major victory.
Reed shot 1-under-par Sunday and minus-15 for the four-day stretch to edge out Rickie Fowler, who shot -14. Jordan Spieth, a Dallas native and multiple major winner, shot -13 to finish third.
Reed, who goes by the nickname "Captain America," is no stranger to the big stage. One of the major players of the 2016 Ryder Cup, Reed was masterful in 82nd edition of the Masters, and he's the newest recipient of the famous green jacket, slipped onto his broad frame by last year’s champion, Sergio Garcia.

Reed shot well enough in the first three rounds to clinch the title. He shot an opening round 69 on Thursday and a 66 on Friday to make the weekend cut. He shot a 67 on Saturday to claim the highest score and spot in Sunday's final pairing.
He had a two-shot lead over Fowler and Spieth going into the 17th hole. Spite was already in the clubhouse when Fowler hit a birdie on the 18th, putting the pressure on Reed to make par or better on the 18th to avoid a playoff with Fowler.
University of Texas senior Doug Ghim shot a 74 on Sunday to finish the tournament 8-over-par, which was the low score for amateurs and crowned him this year's Masters amateur champ.
