Hurricane Harvey: Curfew, Hospital Evacuations And Other Latest Must-Know Facts

Houstonians continue rescue and recovery efforts, and Toyota Center opens tonight as a shelter. Here's the latest of what you need to know.

HOUSTON, TX — Hurricane Harvey has drifted back into the Gulf of Mexico, but flooding continues, and high-water rescues are an ongoing issue throughout the region. Harvey is regrouping in the Gulf, but its projected path is now significantly farther east than initially planned. As things move forward in the Bayou City and recovery begins, here are the facts to know:

  • A curfew was implemented by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner from midnight - 5 a.m.
  • Police Sgt. Steve Perez, a 34-year veteran of the Houston Police Department, became the latest fatality of Harvey when he drowned in his patrol car early Tuesday morning. There have been 15 confirmed deaths in Texas from Hurricane Harvey.
  • President Donald Trump visited Corpus Christi this morning and will be in Austin later today to assess the storm and get a better grip on the state's needs.
  • Learning from what happened with Hurricane Katrina 12 years ago, several Houston-area hospitals have evacuated.
  • The storm was so bad and rainfall so devastating that the National Weather Service had to add new colors to its map show the catastrophic areas.
  • On Monday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott activated the entire Texas National Guard, which is roughly 12,000 troops.
  • Rescued pets are being flown to shelters in other states.
  • Residents in the Barker reservoir have been evacuated because of dangerously high waters. There are controlled, and uncontrolled, releases of water from both the Addicks and Barker reservoirs.
  • A levee breached today at Columbia Lakes and many Brazoria County residents were urged to "get out now."
  • A professor at the University of Tampa was fired after he went to Twitter to blame Hurricane Harvey on Texas' GOP stronghold.
  • Money is being raised all over the country from NFL teams, local sports teams and also from celebrity challenges.
  • And lastly, folks in Louisiana have started to brace for Hurricane Harvey today, which marks the 12th anniversary that Hurricane Katrina made landfall and devastated Louisiana and Mississippi.
