Man Dies Of Self-Inflicted Gun Shot Near The Heights

Hostage Negotiation Team officers and HPD SWAT had standoff with suspects who fired at HPD officers. One man died.

HOUSTON, TX — A man apparently shot himself, leading to his death, during a standoff Thursday near The Heights. According to Houston police, patrol officers were dispatched to a suspicious vehicle call at 220 Van Molan around 10 a.m. Thursday, where Houston firefighters were already on the scene.

Upon arrival, an unknown suspect or suspects inside a pickup truck began shooting at the officers. The officers quickly got out of their marked patrol vehicle and took cover behind it. While taking cover, they heard another gunshot come from inside the pickup truck.

HPD SWAT and Hostage Negotiation Team officers were called to the scene. Two individuals inside the truck were detained for questioning and a third male was found inside the pickup truck, dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

The initial HPD officers who responded were not harmed, nor did they discharge their duty weapons in this incident.
