Plastic Odor Across Houston Area No Cause for Concern: Houston Fire Department
Officials state that haze, smell could have emanated from chemical plant in Channelview
Residents across Houston reported detecting a plastic-like odor across large parts of Houston this morning, according to the Houston Fire Department, which said it received a number of 911 calls from concerned individuals. The department said that the odor posed no risk to the public.
According to KHOU, by 11 .a.m, the odor and a related haze had covered a large portion of downtown Houston and the west side. Some calls about the odor came from areas as far north as Bush Intercontinental Airport.
Air Alliance Houston reported that the Lyondell Bassell chemical facility in Channelview had experience flare-offs, which could have been the source of the odor and haze, though that has not been confirmed. Officials are investigating the issue.
