Top Dog Names For Houston In 2017
Every pooch is like family, and naming them can be either fun or a chore. Here are the most popular male and female dog names this past year

HOUSTON, TX — Dog gone it, I couldn't believe what I saw when I first glanced at the most popular dog names for 2017. Not just for Houston, but for the entire country. I haven't had many dogs in my lifetime, and I can still remember all of their names. There were the dobermans - Max and Heidi. There was Buck, a beautiful golden retriever. Blue was a Catahoula cur dog and Sandman was a golden/pointer mix.
Of course, there are family dogs who don't live with you, but you certainly remember their names. My grandfather had Mike and Ike and my other grandparents had a dachshund named Gretchen. My father and stepmom had a golden retriever named Chew and a poodle appropriately named Prissy. My mother has had two min pins named Mardi and Phoebe, and she has another high-maintenenace min pin named Fannie Chanel.
My household currently has two fur babies. We have a 12-year-old min pin mix named Max and a 3-year-old doberman mix named Bella. So today, while working on my duties at Patch, someone in our newsroom posted rover.com's list of most popular dog names of 2017. Out of curiosity, I opened it. Out of pure fatherhood joy, I beamed when I saw the most popular male name was Max and the most popular female was Bella.

I'm not quite sure I even looked beyond the top names. It's kind of like looking to see which kid placed fourth or fifth after your own kid won the race.
Now, if the dogs are acting a fool or barking at nothing for long amounts of time, then they have other names shouted loudly, like "MAXWELL" and "ISABELLA." That usually gets their attention.

Note: The photos in this story are actually Max and Bella, which is what they go by at South Central Veterinary when they go for shots or boarding. And for the record, both are rescue dogs. Bella was most recently adopted the day after Christmas three years ago.
