Apollo 11 mission celebrated 50 years later

On Wednesday, July 17, the Humble Rotary Club met and celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 spaceflight and moon landing. Joining them was Alan Wylie, who had worked with NASA for 43 years. Wylie gave remarks about the space program as well as some of experiences during his lifelong stay at NASA.
“When I was 12 years old, Sputnik was launched into orbit where it stayed for three weeks,” said Wylie. “In April of 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first man to enter space, and from there the space race was on.”
Wylie mentioned the events that led to the eventual first moon landing. He said, “We started the Mercury program and Alan Shepard became the first American to enter space. We continued with the Mercury flight which resulted in six manned flights. This program would later diverge into the Apollo program.”
