50 years ago, on Sunday, July 20, 1969, at 3:17 p.m. Houston Time, The Apollo 11 Lunar Module touched down on the surface of the moon. Neil Armstrong became the first person to step on any celestial body other than Earth. He was followed by only 11 other people. The objective of that mission was to prove that humans could walk on the moon and return to Earth safely. It was the successful culmination of a challenge stated by President John F. Kennedy that we would achieve this within 10 years.
