Ask The Gardener - "What unusual trees or shrubs can I plant now?"

(Tribune)

Q: What unusual trees or shrubs can I plant now?
A: Some years it’s as if nature is sentient in knowing that we need joy by sharing wonderful seasonal changes. Persimmons are interesting plants to brighten your garden landscape in the fall.
There are two Texas native persimmon tree species, black persimmon (Diospyros texana) and Eastern persimmon (Diospyros virginiana). Black persimmon is usually multitrunked and prefers a dry, sunny area. It is a small, showy tree with peeling bark and subtle stem colors ranging from light gray to pink. It has almost evergreen foliage and produces small cream-colored, bell-shaped flowers in the spring. The fruit are borne only on female plants and are edible when soft with a taste similar to prunes.
