Hurricane Harvey: Coldplay Postpones Houston Concert After All

Coldplay, Lady Antebellum and Mary J. Blige nix weekend appearances in Houston

HOUSTON, TX — Coldplay planned on rocking Houston's NRG Stadium on Friday night despite Hurricane Harvey brewing in the Gulf of Mexico and Houston expecting upwards of 15 inches of rain. But late Friday morning, they sent out a note of regret to their fans that they'd have to postpone.

Hurricane Harvey is a Category 2 storm that's churning toward Category 3 status and is expected to make landfall on the coastal bend Friday evening. Many events around town have been cancelled this weekend and schools will shut down for the next few days starting at noon Friday, and Friday night's show may have been one of the last events to follow suit.

The band wrote on its Twitter page: "Hi everyone in Houston. We really wanted to play tonight, but sitting here all together watching the news about the storm we feel that we can't ask anyone to put their safety at risk. So, sadly, we will have to postpone"

The band said it will give details of rescheduling or refunding and apologized for any inconveniences.

Meanwhile, concert goers hoping to catch Lady Antebellum at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands, or Mary J. Blige's show at the Smart Financial Centre in Sugar Land will have to make other plans, with both entertainers cancelling or postoning their shows because of the hurricane.

Mary J. Blige was scheduled to perform Friday night, and postponed the show. A new date has not yet been announced.

Lady Antebellum, who was scheduled to perform on Sunday, cancelled their concert and will offer refund to ticket holders.

Houston is prone to flood during any hard rainfall, and what's expected the next four days, starting tonight, could be devastating. The National Hurricane Center has already dubbed this storm as "life threatening."

Harvey Could Be The Strongest Hurricane To Hit The US Since 2005

Twitter has blown up with outrage and hilarity. An announcement on Friday night's show could be made shortly after noon.

Some fans who really want to see Coldplay understand the urgency of this storm and realize the show must be postponed.

And, of course, some are on the edge of their seats and would probably brave the storm tonight to see their favorite band.

Bryan Kirk contributed to this report.
