George Springer Signs Two-Year Contract Extension With Astros

The World Series MVP will receive $12 million each season and avoids arbitration ahead of Spring Training.

HOUSTON, TX — The Houston Astros and World Series MVP George Stringer came to terms on a two-year contract to keep the slugger in Houston, all while avoiding arbitration. The Astros agreed to a two-year, $24 million contract with the all-star right fielder Monday morning, according to the USA Today.

According to the report, the deal will be spread evenly between the next two seasons, paying him a cool $12 million each season. In the case the two parties hadn't been able to come to terms, an arbitration hearing had been set. Springer filed for $10.5 million while the Astros countered with $8.5 million. Note: Springer earned $3.9 million last season.

Springer had a banner year in 2017 when he hit .283 with a career-high 34 home runs and 85 RBIs in the regular season. He helped lead Houston to its first World Series title and was named World Series MVP after hitting five home runs in the Astros' dramatic seven-game win over the Dodgers. Springer will have one more year of arbitration eligibility remaining in 2020, and he could become a free agent in 2021.
