Harvey Officially A Category 1 Hurricane

The National Weather Service predicts it will reach Category 3 by landfall, which means wind speeds greater than 110 mph.

HOUSTON, TX — Harvey is now officially a hurricane. No wave, no depression and no tropical storm. Since leaving Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula two days ago, Harvey has continued to strengthen in the western Gulf of Mexico. Now it's a Category 1 hurricane, meaning wind speeds have topped 74 miles per hour.

NWS predicts the storm will reach Category 3 by landfall late Friday night, which means wind speeds will reach 111 miles per hour or greater. Harvey is currently about 340 miles southeast of Port Mansfield, Texas.

Most of the Texas coast is under a hurricane warning, and many inland counties are under a tropical storm warning.
