Houston Weekend Concerts For June 2: Your Top Musical Gigs

How about Jim Lauderdale, the Texas Tornadoes, and Christopher Cross?

HOUSTON, TX — There's always lots of music playing in the Houston area, from rock to punk to soul to zydeco. How does one keep up with all the concerts and shows, from the symphony to Da Camera and all the clubs in this sprawling metropolis? That's easy, just let Patch give you some picks. Here are our concert picks for the weekend of June 2.

First, let's start with Thursday, and the Mucky Duck. The great Jim Lauderdale is back, and he's playing one set only, at 7 p.m. More than two dozen albums, collaborations with Buddy Miller, Ralph Stanley, and others, and the writer of songs covered by many. Don't miss him.

How about some Christopher Cross? You know, the great keyboardist who has had hits galore, including "Sailing" and "Ride Like The Wind" ... to name but two. He's making an appearance at The Dosey Doe Big Barn on Friday, June 2, at 8:30 p.m. He's sold millions of albums, and played with tons of great talents. Here's your chance to see a living gem. Another fine Friday gig is The Mavericks at House of Blues. You know their music and sound, and they've been at it for years and still going strong. If you have not seen them lately, this show is the perfect opportunity.

Last but not least, there's a big show going down on Saturday, June 3, and you don't want to miss this one. It's the 28th Annual Accordion Kings & Queens, and there's nothing else like it under the sun. You'll see and hear the Texas Tornadoes with Flaco Jiménez, The Moravians, and so many others. It's on at the Miller Outdoor Theatre, and the tickets are going fast.
