Minute Maid Park Concession Fire Causes $210K Damage

Something caught fire Wednesday at Minute Maid Park. And, no, it wasn't the bats of the Houston Astros, which were anything but hot.

HOUSTON, TX — Something caught fire Wednesday at Minute Maid Park, and no one will blame the bats of the Houston Astros this time. The Houston Fire Department responded to a fire in the kitchen over a grill in the consession area of the park Wednesday morning.

HFD said the vent system did not activate, but the sprinkler system did activate and failed to fully extinguish the fire that was unintentionally started. Engine 7 controlled the fire, shut the sprinklers off and advised management.

Though HFD estimated $210,000 in damage, approximately $790,000 in property was saved.

And why wasn't it the Astros bats? Houston got shut out both Tuesday and Wednesday nights by the New York Yankees. On Thursday afternoon, New York took a 3-0 lead before the Astros bats came alive and the Bayou City boys took a 5-3 lead. The Bronx Bombers prevailed, though, with a 6-5 win to take the series three games to one.
