Nutcracker By Houston Ballet Starts Dec. 10, New Locations

With their home theater damaged by Hurricane Harvey, here's when and where it will play out in Sugar Land and Houston through Jan. 6.

HOUSTON, TX — German author E. T. A. Hoffmann wrote a story in 1816 about a girl named Clara (Klärchen) who received a wooden nutcracker as a Christmas toy. The very night she receives the gift, Clara's awoken with her room filled with giant mice, and the nutcracker comes alive to defend her by defeating their leader, King Rat. This story that's 201 years old still plays out on the stage today.

The Houston Ballet will perform The Nutcracker beginning Monday, Dec. 10 at Sugar Land's Smart Financial Centre until Dec. 23. They will perform the play at The Hobby Center in Houston from Dec. 30-Jan. 6. The Houston Ballet's home, Wortham Theater, is still under repairs from Hurricane Harvey until May 2018, and it's why the performance moved this season.
