2 Killed After Car Hits Concrete Barrier In North Austin
The incident occurred on Tuesday, Feb. 11, just after 2 a.m. at the intersection of North Capital of Texas Highway and North Mopac.
AUSTIN, TX — Two people were killed this week after a car slammed into a concrete barrier wall along MoPac Expressway, police confirmed on Thursday.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, Feb. 11, just after 2 a.m. at the intersection of North Capital of Texas Highway and the North Mopac northbound service road. A preliminary police investigation shows a black 2015 Toyota Camry was traveling eastbound on the inside lane of North Capital of Texas Highway at a high rate of speed before striking a concrete barrier wall along the North Mopac service road.
By Thursday, police revealed the identities of the two people who died as a result. Owen William Macki, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, Raquel Gitane Aveytia, 24, was rushed to St. David's Round Rock Medical Center where she died shortly after being admitted, police added.

The fatal crash more than doubles the number of traffic fatalities that had occurred at the same point in 2019, police said. The incident marked the 15th fatal traffic crash of 2020 in Austin, police said, resulting in 16 fatalities so far this year. At this time in 2019, police added, there were seven traffic fatalities.

It's unclear what caused the driver to hit the barrier or if impairment was a factor in the crash, as police provided no further details.
