Audiologists Offer Hearing Aid Discounts Ahead Of ACL Fest

Lively, an online, at-home hearing screening service by audiologists, offering $50 off should concertgoers need post-concert hearing aids.

AUSTIN, TX — Redefining the term "captive audience," Lively — an online, at-home hearing screening service by audiologists — is offering $50 off for music lovers needing hearing aids after checking hearing after attending a concert, including the massive Austin City Limits Festival set to kick off on Friday.

In a telephone interview, Dr. Christina Callahan, head of Clinical Audiology at Lively, told Patch clients can visit an audiologist in person or take the online test to take advantage of the offer. The process takes about ten minute, she said. Those choosing the former option can secure their hearing aids onsite while those ordered online take two days to send out.

The discount applies to a Lively hearing aid, which includes a hearing check. The audiologist described the hearing aids as small and lightweight designed to fit comfortably over the ear. Items can be purchased via the company's app.

"Loud music can, over time, damage your hearing," Callahan said, noting the level of hearing loss depends on myriad factors ranging from the type of music to how loud it's played. "Concerts, especially indoor ones, tend to range from the 100- to 115-decibel range," she said.

That's about the same amount of noise emanating from your standard construction site, she noted. That's not jet engine proportions, but construction sites are pretty noisy. Notice upon passing one that workers manning jackhammers and similar implements wear protective, noise-cancelling headphones during their work.

Concertgoers aren't the only ones vulnerable to hearing loss, but those listening to music on their phones with earbuds. In a city that calls itself the "live music capital of the world," it might be worth looking into one's hearing health.

Lively has set up a portal where concertgoers can show a copy of an attended concert as evidence of exposure to loud music and eligibility for the discount. To visit that portal, click here.

Editor's note: An original version of the story suggested the $50 discount applied to a hearing test, rather than purchase of a hearing aid. The story has been clarified to specify the application of the offered discount.
