Austin Community College To Host Community Events

From helping DACA students thrive in today's culture to honoring veterans, ACC has myriad activities planned in the coming days.

AUSTIN, TX — Austin Community College is hosting a series of community events from Nov.11 through Nov. 17.

Events include:

  • ACC honors those who served through Veterans Day events: ACC welcomes veterans, students, their families, and employees to the third annual Veterans Day Commemoration from noon to 2 p.m., Monday, Nov. 11, at ACC Elgin Campus (1501 U.S. 290, Elgin). Veterans and the community will enjoy live music, an awards ceremony, and several speakers. Several other events will be held around the district. For more information about the college’s military and veterans programs, visit austincc.edu/veteransservices.
  • Helping DACA students thrive in today’s culture: ACC partners with American Gateways for an information session for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) students at 3 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 14, at Highland Business Center (5930 Middle Fiskville Rd.). An American Gateways attorney will be present to explain the details on how to apply and/or renew their DACA. In September, ACC Board of Trustees signed on to a project to provide testimony in support for DACA and the Dreamers.
  • More students seek lecture-based options over textbooks: ACC’s great questions lecture is now enrolling for spring 2020. The college hosts its Fall 2019 Great Questions Lecture Series from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 14, at ACC Eastview Campus, Room 8500 (3401 Webberville Rd.). Guest speaker Dr. Fatemeh Keshavarz discusses the works of 13th century poet Jalal al-Din Rumi. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, click here.
  • Protecting your garden from the winter freezes: Winter doesn't mean you need to put down your spay and shovel. ACC experts are digging into the two gardening seasons in Central Texas — hot and cold. ACC is offering up interviews with the Sustainable Agriculture program to discuss the steps Central Texans can take to grow winter vegetables and be ready for the spring. Contact Sydney Pruitt, sydney.pruitt@austincc.edu, to schedule an interview.
