The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality announced both June 16 and June 18 as Ozone Action Days for the Austin-Round Rock-Georgetown area, meaning that ozone levels in the Austin area are forecast to reach levels that are “unhealthy for sensitive groups.” Sensitive groups include senior citizens, children and teenagers, adults with respiratory or cardiovascular illness and outdoor workers.
Ozone is found in the Earth's upper atmosphere and at the ground level. Upper level ozone is generally considered good and provides protection for UV rays. However, ground-level ozone is created by pollutants and is considered bad. Ground-level ozone is particularly harmful for asthmatics, children, seniors and individuals spending a lot of time outdoors. Inhaling ground-level can cause lung discomfort, and long-term exposure can cause more severe symptoms. Ground-level ozone is also harmful to plant life. The best way to lower one's contribution to ground-level ozone is to lower pollution output. Carpooling, for example, would help reduce overall pollution output. Other ways to lower pollution output include switching to cleaning products that do not contain harmful chemicals, and reducing electricity use.
Air Central Texas recommends to take precautions' to limit exposure, especially if you are sensitive to ozone pollution.
For additional information on upcoming ozone action days, please visit AirCentralTexas.org. Ozone action day season runs from April through October 31 for the Austin area.
