Grand Jury Clears Pflugerville PD Sergeant In 2020 Shooting

A Travis County grand jury has cleared a Pflugerville police sergeant of all charges in a November 2020 shooting that injured one man.

PFLUGERVILLE, TX — A Travis County grand jury has cleared a Pflugerville police sergeant of all charges in a November 2020 shooting that injured one man, authorities said Tuesday.

The special grand jury did not return an indictment Tuesday for Pflugerville Police Department Sergeant Anthony Campana. Campana was cleared of all charges in the shooting incident, according to the Travis County District Attorney's office.

“The District Attorney’s office takes the work of presenting all facts and evidence to a grand jury very seriously,” said District Attorney Jose Garza. “In this case, an independent group of members of the Travis County community, heard the evidence and law and decided that Sergeant Campana’s conduct was lawful."

On November 19th, 2020, Pflugerville police responded to a domestic violence call at 1825 Apartments on Foothill Farms Loop, officials said.

After speaking to the victim, the officers attempted to speak to a man involved who was identified as Kelvin Scott. Scott refused to come outside and barricaded himself inside the apartment for three days.

Officials said Scott called 911 on November 22 to say he was coming outside, and when he came to the doorway, he refused to put his hands up as he hid one hand behind his back. Police said they were aware Scott had weapons inside the apartment.

Refusing to follow authorities' commands, Scott stood at the doorway for several seconds before charging police with a 12-inch wood cutting tool in his hand, authorities said.

As a result, Sgt. Campana fired his duty weapon at Scott. Scott was struck and hit with one bullet. The man was later taken to the hospital and released to the Travis County Jail shortly afterwards, officials said.

The district attorney's office said the Texas Rangers were asked to investigate the use of force on Scott by the Pflugerville police officers.

As of Thursday, Scott is currently booked in the Travis County Jail with pending charges that arose from this 2020 incident. The charges he faces include the second-degree felony of Assault Family Violence Strangulation and first-degree felony of Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant.

His case will be prosecuted in the 460th District Court, the DA's office said.
