PFLUGERVILLE, TX — It's estimated that 85 million, or roughly 68% of U.S. households own a pet, this according to the latest survey in 2018 by the American Pet Products Association or APPA. For many people, the circumstances surrounding their decision to adopt a pet is based on need. Perhaps the need to alleviate stress and anxiety, or the need for companionship, or as a way to counter depression. The human-animal bond is undeniable and countless experts tout the benefits of owning a pet.

Notwithstanding our professed love for animals, only 1 out of every 10 dogs born finds a permanent home. According to the Humane Society there are 3,500 animal shelters in the US and 10,000 rescue groups and sanctuaries in our country. Of the 70 million stray animals, only about six to eight million cats or dogs enter any of the 3,500 animal shelters each year.

The good news is in a national survey, Austin ranked third with highest percentage (over 50%) of households with pets in major US metro areas. Step outside and you'll see just about everyone strolling with their pup, or sitting on a patio enjoying an alfresco meal with their four-legged companions. And let's not forget about all the endearing cat photos we couldn't help but like or share from our friends social media pages.
