Online Calculator Helps Central Texas Enroll In Health Insurance

AUSTIN, TX — Officials at St. David’s Foundation on Thursday unveiled a new online calculator to help Central Texans enroll in health insurance during the open enrollment period running from now until Dec. 15, 2019.

The new health insurance premium calculator at WhatsMyPremium.org offers consumers a quick estimate of monthly premiums available for HealthCare.gov plans, including financial assistance for those who are eligible, officials said. The calculator can help drive new enrollments in Marketplace plans. With one fewer day in the enrollment season so far, new enrollments are up nearly 3 percent nationally. Texas enrollments are on par with last year, but across the nation total enrollments are down about 13 percent.

"A fear of high premiums is a top reason people give for why they haven’t signed up for a health insurance plan," officials wrote. "The WhatsMyPremium.org calculator helps to eliminate that fear by providing estimates for affordable health plans available in Central Texas. Some Central Texans will find they qualify for $0 per month Bronze plans, and other affordable options."

Designed specifically for Central Texas, the calculator estimates health premiums for plans available in the five-county area of Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis and Williamson. Once a user receives an estimate, he or she can connect with local health insurance experts at one of nearly 20 locations offering free assistance to find the best plan for each person’s unique healthcare needs and budget, officials said.

“The premium calculator is a great resource for people shopping for health insurance. It provides a helpful estimate of health insurance premiums before going through the whole HealthCare.gov application," said Kori Hattemer, director of Prosper Programs at Foundation Communities — the largest nonprofit enrollment organization in Central Texas. "Since premiums vary based on one's income, this easy tool can help people get a sense of their health insurance costs, which we hope encourages them to sign up."
