Pedestrian Struck, Killed By Car: Austin Police Department

Man standing on narrow concrete next to Parmer Lane struck and killed by Jeep that was taking evasive action in trying to avoid hitting car.

AUSTIN, TX — Police on Friday revealed details related to a fatal traffic accident that killed a bystander standing next to the roadway earlier this week.

The incident occurred along the 1800 block of West Parmer Lane just before 5:10 p.m. A preliminary police investigation revealed the driver of a black, 2014 Jeep Patriot was traveling eastbound in the inside lane of the road when he attempted evasive action to stop from striking a Hyundai Veloster stopped at the red light on Metric Boulevard, according to a police advisory.

Instead, the Jeep clipped the back of the Hyundai and jumped the curb dividing east and westbound traffic on Parmer Lane before striking Derril Glen Lovelace, 54, who was standing on a narrow concrete strip. The driver of the Jeep also collided with a silver, 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer and a gray, 2015 Subaru Forester that were traveling westbound on W. Parmer Lane.
