Pflugerville Police Launch 'Cool Moves' Summer Program

Police will be on the lookout for young residents' behavior, issuing 'tickets' for free ice cream as a reward for responsible moves.

PFLUGERVILLE, TX — It's that time of year when Pflugerville police officers will be enhance monitoring of young people poised to issue youthful residents "tickets" based on their behavior. It's a good thing: The Pflugerville Police Department’s Cool Moves program is returning this summer to reward children for being safe.

Through Aug. 31, Pflugerville police officers will be on the lookout for children showing “Cool Moves,” including looking both ways before crossing the street, wearing a helmet while riding a bike or skateboard, using hand signals while riding a bike and using crosswalks.

Children practicing such safe behavior will receive a ticket from a police officer redeemable for a free ice cream cone from participating business partners, officials explained. This year the program is supported with free ice cream cones from Cece’s Froyo, Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt, Andy’s Frozen Custard and Dairy Queen.

It's a fun program to be sure, but also one imparting important safety lessons. In that vein, police officers this year will interact with city youth wearing protective face coverings while practicing social distancing in light of the continued threat of the coronavirus, officials said.

Each summer, Pflugerville officers issue more than 500 tickets for free ice cream to safety-conscious children. For more information visit pflugervilletx.gov/coolmoves.
