Pflugerville Rec Center Offers Yoga For Seniors

Mix of adjustable poses yields ideal regimen for the older set.

NORTH AUSTIN-PFLUGERVILLE, TX -- The Pflugerville Recreation Center has scheduled free trial yoga classes for seniors Tuesday and Friday morning toward the end of registering older residents for regular sessions starting next week.

The free classes are scheduled at 9 a.m. at the rec center, located at 400 Immanuel Rd. The instructor, Patty Wood, has taught various yoga styles for five years, and is a certified Group Fitness Instructor.

Yoga is often recommended as an ideal form of exercise for seniors in that it doesn’t require any special equipment and is low impact.

In an article on WebMD, yoga is touted for its variety of styles--yielding myriad sessions that can be individually adapted depending on an older person’s range of mobility.

“It might even help you age better, keeping you flexible and building strength through low-impact moves,” the article reads. “

For seniors afflicted with arthritis or limited mobility, yoga offers modifications to virtually each pose in accommodating such health issues, according to WebMD.

The trial mini-sessions at the local rec center will entail 30 minutes of movement and personal time with the instructor.

Regular classes begin next week with chair yoga on Tuesdays at 9 a.m. starting Jan. 12. Mat yoga will be offered on Fridays starting Jan. 15.

The cost is $6 per class or $50 for a 10-class pass.
