Police ID Teen Who Died In East Austin Crash (Updated)
Incident just before 1 p.m. on Feb. 9 along the 6000 block of Springdale Road left Messiah Zion Mouton, 13, dead at the scene.

EAST AUSTIN, TEXAS — Police on Tuesday identified the teenager who died after the car he was traveling in skidded and slammed into a pole this past Sunday.
The incident occurred just before 1 p.m. on Feb. 9 along the 6000 block of Springdale Road, according to a police advisory. Officials said the driver of a 1997 red BMW was traveling northbound on Springdale Road when motorist lost control of the vehicle. The car skidded sideways before overturning and striking a utility pole, police said.
A passenger in the vehicle, Messiah Zion Mouton, 13, was pronounced dead at the scene. According to birth information given by police, the young victim had just become a teenager after his Dec. 5 birthday. It's unclear if Mouton was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.

The incident marked Austin’s seventh fatal traffic crash of 2019, police said, resulting in seven fatalities this year. At this time in 2018, police added, there were five fatal traffic crashes and six traffic fatalities.
