Child Killed In Drive-By Was Case Of Mistaken Identity: Police

A home that was riddled with bullets and took the life on an 11-year-old boy may have been a case of mistaken identity, police said.

CHANNELVIEW, TX — Police are looking for suspects in a drive-by shooting that killed an 11-year-old boy Sunday morning. Investigators said the child was asleep inside his home in the 15100 block of N. Brentwood Drive when someone pulled up at about 4:20 a.m. and fired more than a dozen bullets into the home.

"There were several children sleeping in the house," Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.

Investigators recovered numerous shell casings from in front of the house, indicating that a semiautomatic rifle was used to shoot at the home.

"This is a tragic, a senseless, and sad situation," Gonzalez said. "This is a child and these are cowards who shoot into a home. They could have killed or injured a lot more people."

Gonzalez said there were several other children sleeping in the same room with the child who was killed, who managed to escape the hail of bullets.

Officials said the family had only been in the home for about two months, and that the shooters may have targeted the previous occupants of the home.

Anyone with any information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477) or the Harris County Sheriff’s Office at 713-222-6000.
