However, the overwhelming majority — 59 percent in fact — always start with the ears when indulging in chocolate bunny consumption.

But there’s more Easter facts you need to know, and there’s a lot of them according to a recent survey by WalletHub.com.

Here are a few to get you in the Easter mood.

First, Easter is a real favorite with grocers and retailers and here’s why:

  • There will be about 180 million eggs purchased for Easter egg hunts
  • Americans will spend about $18.2 billion on Easter.
  • $3.2 billion spent on clothing
  • $5.7 billion of the Easter feast.
  • $2.6 billion will be spent on just candy
  • $2.9 billion will be spent on gifts

While some associate Easter with a bunny who delivers eggs and candied goodies, others consider the spiritual aspects of the day, and the observance of Jesus Christ rising from the dead three days after his crucifixion.

According to the survey, 71 percent of Americans identify themselves as Christians, and just over 50 percent of Americans plan to be in a church service on Easter Sunday.

A majority of those surveyed live in 29 of the 50 states, with most living in the southern and midwestern US.

Did we mention the live bunnies?

Those lovely furry bunnies are a cute gift at Easter, but according to the survey, about 80 percent of those bunnies are abandoned within a year.

Some, however end up in someone’s freezer to be prepared later for a nice meal.

About 850,000 rabbits are sold for consumption each year, which amounts to about $15 million.

By the same token the U.S. exports about 50 metric tons of rabbit meat, while importing 500 metric tons of the same thing.
