The Last Bucket: San Jac Basketball Program Comes To An End

The Final Buzzer: San Jac closes the chapter on its basketball and volleyball programs

PASADENA, TX — For more than 50 years, the sound of the basketball hitting the hardcourt at San Jacinto College’s Anders Gym has been a given, but after Wednesday night that sound will only be a fond memory.

On Feb. 28, the San Jacinto College Ravens will play their final game at the college against the Angelina College Roadrunners.

On Oct. 31, 2016, the San Jacinto College Board of Regents voted to end the school’s basketball and volleyball programs at the end of the 2018 season.

Over nearly 6 decades, the San Jac Ravens have won 1,586 and lost just 384 games, but whether the final game at Anders Gym is a win or a loss, the community in Pasadena is losing a piece of its old self, and a part of something that made Pasadena and San Jac something special.

But after the last free throw, the last bucket, and the last technical foul, time will expire for the San Jac Basketball program at Anders Gym when the clock winds down for the very last time.

When the news broke the programs were ending in 2016, coaches shook their head in disbelief.
Scott Horstman, an assistant coach with the program was among those shocked at the news.

"It kind of hit me blind side. Nothing's ever been mentioned about doing away with the athletics program. First thing to hit my mind is how are they going to do it?, why are they going to do it? I'm sad for the program, but I'm a whole lot sadder for the coaches," he said.

Ultimately, the athletic programs at all three campuses will vanish, with the exception of the baseball program at the north campus, and the softball program at the south campus.
