San Jacinto College in La Porte Offering Maritime Engineering Classes

San Jacinto College's new Maritime Technology and Training Center in La Porte will be offering engineering courses.

LA PORTE, TX — San Jacinto College's new Maritime Technology and Training Center in La Porte will be offering engineering course to help mariners meet new U.S. Coast Guard regulations that go into effect on Jan. 1.

The college's new maritime program is designed for working mariners who need to update their USCG certifications. Some of the classes currently being offered include engine room resource management, leadership and teamwork, designated duty engineer 4000 horsepower and management of electrical and electronic control equipment.

Additional maritime engineering courses will be up and running later this year. The school expects to begin offering courses on rating part of an engineering watch motor only assessments in the following weeks and months.

San Jacinto College is also developing courses designed to teach sailors how to be an officer in charge of an engineering watch. There will be classes that specialize in engineering watches for the ship's motor, auxiliary machinery, basic electronics and electricity as well as instruments and controllers.

The school will also offer an associate degree program in maritime transportation, for those who are new to the industry, and an associate degree for cargo handling/logistics.
