Small Benzene Spill Reported in Deer Park

A Deer Park refinery reported a small benzene spill on the afternoon of Friday, July 15.

Deer Park, TX -- The Vopak Terminal Deer Park, 2759 Independence Pkwy., reported a small benzene spill on the afternoon of Friday, July 15. The spill occurred at about noon.

About 500 gallons of benzene spilled on the tanker Maritime Jingan while the boat was moored at the terminal. The leak was secured within a matter of hours and only a small portion of the benzene reached the water.

The spill prompted the evacuation of the San Jacinto Monument and Museum state park and the closure of the Houston Ship Channel between the Lynchburg Ferry Crossing and Carpenters Bayou.

Normal operations to both the park and the ship channel were restored by 3 p.m.
