Although we have found ways to live while distancing ourselves physically during the COVID-19 pandemic, isolation can still be a detriment to one’s own wellbeing. As humans, we have an inherent need to stay connected for important social and emotional reasons. Technology has played a major role in helping us stay engaged, however, and we are learning new ways to do the things we love from the safety of our homes every day.

The holidays are a time to slow down and reflect on the past year: How have you spent your time during the pandemic? Have you taken up a new hobby or found a charitable cause to get involved in? Are you meeting new people through online social groups? If the dark days of winter are starting to get you down, here are some ways you can stay active, connected and healthy during the upcoming winter months:

  • Try something new. Pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones is actually good for us. Trying new things also allows us to expand our minds and learn—both about said new thing and about ourselves. Our Plano Recreation catalog features a mix of free and affordable virtual and in-person classes in the areas of crafts and fine arts, swimming, tennis, personal and professional development, music, martial arts, fitness training and more. Find your next new thing!
  • Surprise a friend or relative you haven’t spoken to in a while with a phone call or video chat.
  • Write a letter to someone special. Handwriting can help us slow down and fully engage with our thoughts.
  • Support local businesses such as restaurants, bookstores, etc. Visit Plano is a great resource for finding information about local dining and shopping opportunities.
  • Take care of your body. Take deep breaths, stretch, and practice meditating. Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals, exercise regularly, and get plenty of sleep. Make time to unwind. The CDC also has helpful tips for managing stress and anxiety during the pandemic.
  • Connect with others. Talk to people you trust about your concerns and how you are feeling if you need some support.
  • Connect with your community- or faith-based organizations. While social distancing measures are in place, consider connecting online, through social media, or by phone or mail.
  • Volunteer or donate. There are many ways in which you can help those in our community, starting with a local food bank. See this list of food pantry locations from foodpantries.org. You can also give your time or donation dollars to a number of worthy nonprofit organizations. The City of Plano’s Community Services Division welcomes donations in the form of time, skills, and resources to supports its many housing-related programs.
  • Connect with Nature. Recent studies have exposed the holistic benefit—even necessity—of spending time outdoors, both for kids and adults. Set aside time for outdoor play with the kids or a peaceful nature walk through one of Plano’s award-winning parks and trails.
