Coronavirus Spurs Stony Point HS Closure In Round Rock

Round Rock ISD officials said spread of illness has prompted a halt to in-person learning in November; football team cancels practice.

ROUND ROCK, TX — Stony Point High School is closed for the remainder of November after community spread of the coronavirus, district officials announced on Monday.

In a post on the Round Rock ISD website, district officials said all students will take remote classes through Nov. 30 "effective immediately." The campus is scheduled to reopen by Dec. 1, officials added, and all extracurricular activities will be suspended until that date.

“Round Rock ISD works closely with both of our local health agencies, Williamson County and Cities Health District (WCCHD) and Austin Public Health (APH) to help guide decisions for our campuses related to COVID-19,” district officials wrote.

“The length of time a campus remains closed is based on the recommendation from the health department in an effort to reduce transmission," officials wrote. "During school closures, all areas of the campus will be deep cleaned and sanitized using hospital-grade disinfectants before the campus reopens for on-campus instruction.”

Separately, the Stony Point Tigers football team alerted on Twitter to cancellations of practice sessions until further notice.

On her Facebook page, Place 4 trustee Cory Vessa said the move was made by administrative staff without consultation from board members: “The board was not consulted on this decision. It was a decision made by administration on an emergent basis to prevent what was deemed to be a possible super spreader situation at the school. As contact tracing was done on recent positives, and as the Public Health Department monitored spread in the community, they felt this was the prudent course of action. Obviously, I have many questions I feel need to be addressed at Thursday’s meeting. I appreciate those that have reached out to aide [sic] in that effort.”

According to district officials, updates will be conveyed via the Round Rock ISD website, the Reimagining Education page and across its social media accounts.
