Officers arrived five minutes after the first call and immediately placed the hotel and nearby businesses on lockdown, Banks said.
After three officers walked through the front door of the hotel, they were immediately confronted by the suspect who had the handgun. An officer then shot at the man, Banks said.
Banks said the man was hit and police immediately rendered first aid to the man. Round Rock Fire also aided the man, however, the suspect died on scene. No one else was shot or injured.
The chief of police said officers were able to clear the hotel and get employees and guests out of the building to safety.
Banks said police do not have any other details they can release at this time to identify the suspect.
"This is a multi-jurisdictional investigation, which will include the Williamson County District Attorney's office, the Texas Rangers, the Williamson County Justice of the Peace and the FBI," Banks said.
The officer who discharged his firearm and the officers involved in the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave as per Round Rock police protocol, the chief of police said.
"I would like to give my thoughts out to those who were involved in today's incident. We had multiple witnesses and victims that were confronted by this man with a firearm," Banks said.
Authorities will go over police body camera and surveillance video for more information about the shooting. Police said they plan to release more information to the public when it becomes available.
