Pflugerville, Round Rock Mayors Set Bets On Upcoming Playoff Game

ROUND ROCK, TX — You know things are getting serious with Texas high school playoffs when mayors start making friendly wagers betting on their hometown teams winning.

On Monday, the City of Round Rock tweeted out evidence of such wagering. Pflugerville Mayor Victor Gonzales and his counterpart in Round Rock, Craig Morgan, have agreed to get the other food prominently figuring in their respective towns in the event their teams — Hendrickson and Cedar Ridge high schools, respectively — lose Saturday's big game.

Saturday's upcoming playoff game is no ordinary game, but an "...epic state quarterfinal rivalry," as Round Rock officials described on Twitter. The upcoming contest pits the Hendrickson Hawks against the Round Rock’s Cedar Ridge Raiders. That calls for some special betting: Gonzales will offer up a pizza from Russo's New York Pizzeria while Morgan has committed to giving a box of pastries from the city's famed Round Rock Donuts.

On the Twitter post, Round Rock officials are getting a bit confident about how the bet will go down: "We can't wait to see Mayor Morgan receive a victory pizza!!!" officials wrote, the three exclamation points theirs as proof of their enthusiastic prediction.

Them's fightin' words. But while high school football is all but a religion in Texas, it's all in good fun.

The Hendrickson High School varsity football team from Pflugerville has a neutral playoff game vs. Cedar Ridge High School from Round Rock scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 9. The kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
