ROUND ROCK, TX — Round Rock police have identified the man who was fatally shot by an officer after he threatened to kill people with a handgun at the Home2Suites Hotel on Monday.

Police received multiple 911 calls around 9:45 a.m. Monday for a man with a handgun in the 1000 block of West Louis Henna Boulevard, officials told reporters at a news conference early Monday afternoon.

Round Rock Chief of Police Allen Banks said Diaz entered the hotel and pointed his weapon at people, including children, and threatened them if they "wanted to die."

Banks said Diaz started to run from the building and people began to lock themselves inside offices at the hotel.

Once police arrived, three officers, including Grigsby, walked through the front door of the hotel, and were immediately confronted by Diaz who had the handgun.

Grigsby took aim and shot at Diaz. After officers and EMS performed life saving measures on Diaz, he died at the scene, authorities said.

Officials said the department's last officer-involved shooting was in January 2018.

The investigation is ongoing and is being assisted by the Williamson County District Attorney’s Office, Texas Rangers, Williamson County Justice of the Peace and FBI.

Authorities will go over police body camera and surveillance video for more information about the shooting. Police said they plan to release more information to the public when it becomes available.
