USA Deaf Basketball Tournament Coming To Round Rock

SA Deaf Basketball National Championship Tournament scheduled April 12-14 in self-styled 'Sports Capital of Texas.'

ROUND ROCK, TX — The USA Deaf Basketball National Championship Tournament will take place in Round Rock this week, a setting organizers said is replete with logistical advantages to stage the meet.

The event will be staged at the Round Rock Sports Center in a city that has dubbed itself the "Sports Capital of Texas" this Thursday and Friday, April 12-13, and at Round Rock High School April 14. The USADB Art Kruger and Thomas Elliott National Tournament is the men’s 74th annual and women’s 28th annual championship. This year, the three-day tournament features 36 of the best deaf basketball teams from all over the U.S., organizers noted.

“We chose Round Rock as the location of our national Deaf basketball tournament for a number of reasons," USA Deaf Basketball Commissioner Christina Costello said. "First, we needed a facility in our Southwest Region, which includes Texas. Second, we needed a venue that met the majority of the requirements on our tournament checklist."

Available meeting space added to the appeal of staging the event in Round Rock, she added: "The meeting room at the Round Rock Sports Center was an added bonus. We will host our team meeting there, which allows teams to see the courts in advance and become familiar with them,” Costello explained. “We also liked the location’s close proximity to the Deaf community and the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin.”

The Youth All Star Deaf Basketball game is at noon Saturday at Round Rock High School and includes the top high school senior boy basketball players from all over the U.S., according to organizers.

“We are so honored to host the USA Deaf Basketball National Championship for the first time here in Round Rock,” Round Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Nancy Yawn said. “We were happy to collaborate with the tournament organizers on their requirements for this exciting national tournament. We look forward to hosting the players, their families and all the fans who come to Round Rock this weekend to enjoy watching high-level basketball, eating at our restaurants, shopping at our stores and staying at our hotels.”
