Workshop Offers Round Rock Parents Helpful Advice On Screen Time

ROUND ROCK, TX — As a parent, you've likely read the advice of the medical community when it comes to children and screen time. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization offer their respective numerical screen guidelines, however, there is no magic number offering parents and caregivers with the right answer on how much is too much.

To gain a better sense of what may be right for your child, it's helpful to know what exactly is screen time. The Common Sense Census: Media Use by Tweens and Teens identifies four main categories of screen time.

• Passive consumption: watching TV, reading, and listening to music
• Interactive consumption: playing games and browsing the Internet
• Communication: video-chatting and using social media
• Content creation: using devices to make digital art or music

As a way to stay informed and learn ways to help your child succeed by limiting the use of screen media, and explore ways in which screen time affects a students (ages 5-18), the Round Rock Public Library will host a workshop for parents and caregivers. "Positive Parenting: Managing Screen Time" with Lisa Feng, Alpha Education Partner, will offer suggestions on how to manage screen time, so that a child's emotions or academic performance aren't negatively affected. The workshop provides tips on raising children in an emotionally-healthy way paving the way for them to thrive socially and academically.

The workshop is free and open to the public, however, the content is most appropriate for parents and caregivers of school-aged children ages 5-18.
