Cops Find 55 Undocumented Immigrants In Tractor-Trailer: Report

A tip to law enforcement led to the discovery of a big rig carrying 55 undocumented immigrants in San Antonio.

SAN ANTONIO, TX — More than 50 undocumented immigrants, some of them children, were detained after police were tipped off that an 18-wheeler would be transporting them. The big rig was stopped at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 8400 block of Laurelcrest Place.

Officials said the people aboard the semi appeared to be in good health. The people were being smuggled into the country in the refrigerated tractor-trailer, reported KSAT.

Officials said about five of the undocumented immigrants suffered injuries when they tried to flee from law enforcement officers and were apprehended. Those five were taken to area hospitals and treated for minor injuries.

Officials from Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services pledged to provide legal services to the 55 individuals who were detained. Meanwhile, community members purchased pizza and fed them, KSAT reported.

The remaining immigrants were taken into custody by Homeland Security agents, and will likely be returned to their home country.
