“March Out Hunger” Food Drive Adds New Drop Off Locations

Drive hosted by local VFW posts, San Antonio Food Bank and Humana Ends Nov. 11

To make it more convenient for San Antonians wanting to support the “March Out Hunger” food drive, new drop off locations have been added. The four San Antonio-area MCCI Medical Group locations have joined the effort to help end hunger in our military community.

One in five households served by a local food bank has at least one member who has served, or is currently serving, in the U.S. military (according to Feeding America). The food drive, which started Patriot Day (Sept. 11), is hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. (VFW) District 20; Humana, a leading health and well-being company; and the San Antonio Food Bank.

Residents are encouraged to drop off non-perishable food items from now until Veterans Day (Nov. 11) at the 25 drop-off locations throughout San Antonio.

With San Antonio celebrating its Tricentennial this year, the goal is to collect 300,000 pounds of food, which in turn is equivalent to 234,375 meals.

The campaign will culminate at a Veterans Resource Fair on Saturday, Nov. 17 hosted by the three organizations at the food bank. The fair will be free and will include representatives from several area veterans organizations. For more information, please call (210) 337-FOOD (3663).

As part of its Bold Goal work to make San Antonio 20 percent healthier by 2020, Humana is bringing the VFW and the San Antonio Food Bank together to impact food insecurity locally. Earlier this year, Humana partnered with Feeding America (the national affiliate for the San Antonio Food Bank) to stage a series of events throughout the year that will drive food donations and raise awareness of food insecurity with a focus on helping veterans. In addition, Humana is a national affiliate partner of the VFW.
