Councilwoman Gonzales Urges her Colleagues to Approve the Development of the Lone Star Brewery

SAN ANTONIO (May 5, 2021) – Members of the City’s Workforce and Economic Development Committee gave their unanimous approval today for full Council consideration of the Lone Star District Development project.

The $709,000,000 development proposal is a 10-year design, demolition, adaptive reuse, and construction project parsed into three phases that will convert the historic Lone Star Brewery on the city’s near South side into a 32 acre mixed-use development complex.

“The Lone Star Brewery has been abandoned for 25 years and this project has been eight years in the making,” said District 5 five Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales in whose district the brewery is located. “This will be a transformative project for the near southside so I urge my council colleagues to give it a greenlight when it comes before them later this month,” she added.

With the full Council’s approval the project’s demolition work should begin in the fourth quarter of this year. The first phase of the project is expected to last four years and total construction will generate 3,900 jobs. Another 1,550 full-time jobs will be generated once the project is completed.

Today's approval sends the project’s Economic Development Grant Agreement for an amount not to exceed $24,000,000 in tax increment financing and tax rebates for a term of fifteen years for consideration to the Inner City TIRZ and City Council.
