Texas High School Principal Kills Himself On Campus After Submitting Resignation

Police found the body of Kirbyville High School Principal Dennis Reeves in his idling truck, along with a .380 caliber semiautomatic pistol.

BEAUMONT, TX — A Texas high school principal shot himself to death inside his vehicle on Tuesday afternoon after having submitted his resignation.

KFDM in Beaumont reported that responding police officers found the man's body shortly after 5 p.m. inside his truck, along with a .380 caliber semiautomatic pistol with which he took his own life. The engine was running and the vehicle was in the reverse gear, but the principal's foot was on the brake pedal and the truck was stationary, police said.

The man was identified as Kirbyville High School Principal Dennis Reeves. Reportedly, he had informed the school district's superintendent of his resignation at around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Kirbyville Police Chief Paul Brister told the news station.

It's not clear what motivated Reeves to take his own life or what may have led to his resignation.

Classed had already ended for the year at the school district, and no students were on campus at the time of the incident. Kirbyville High School at 100 E Wildcat Dr. is located in its namesake city 53 miles north of Beaumont, some 30 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico.
