Texas Woman Gets 40 Years For Hot Car Deaths Of 2 Daughters

A Texas woman who left her two young daughters alone in a hot car as temperatures reached over 90 degrees and allegedly told hospital staff the children collapsed after smelling flowers was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

The girls, 1-year-old Brynn Hawkins and 2-year-old Addyson Overgard-Eddy, died at University Hospital in San Antonio in June 2017. According to a report from Hill Country Breaking News, when Hawkins found her daughters she allegedly told people she wasn't taking the girls to the hospital because she didn't want to go to jail.

Dr. John Gebhart, who treated the young girls, told the judge that girls most likely "had very painful deaths," Hill Country Breaking News reported. Hawkins pleaded guilty in September to charges relating to the deaths of her daughters.

According to the report in Hill Country Breaking News, Hawkins, who was 19 at the time, left her daughters in the car all night after she smoked marijuana inside a shed at a party. The air conditioner was on and the car was running when a man sleeping inside woke up around 8 a.m. turned the car off and rolled up the windows, according to the news report. The man will face trial in January.

The prosecution said Hawkins apparently woke up around noon and had sexual intercourse with a man before going to her car where she found the toddlers, Hill Country Breaking News reported.
