First phase of improvements to Stassney Lane under construction

Stassney Lane connects Austin Community College's South Austin Campus, Crockett High School and Garrison Park as well as several businesses and neighborhoods in the area. Austin Transportation, Austin Public Works and Capital Metro are partnering to enhance safety and mobility for all travelers along this key east-west connection.

Construction is underway on the first of three phases to install multimodal improvements along Stassney Lane from West Gate Boulevard to South Congress Avenue. Phase 1 improvements include:

  • Traffic signal upgrades at the West Gate Boulevard/Stassney Lane and Menchaca Road/Stassney Lane intersections.
  • Protected bicycle lanes from West Gate Boulevard to South Congress Avenue.
  • Shorter, safer pedestrian crossings between West Gate Boulevard and Menchaca Road.

Future phases will include new bus stop construction and intersection improvements. This project's design was informed by community feedback gathered in late 2019 and early 2020. Learn more and subscribe to project updates at AustinTexas.gov/2016Bond-StassneyLn.

Find Austin’s safest, most updated bike routes with the Austin Bike Map

Austin’s online interactive Bike Map keeps things simple and direct by providing a comprehensive view of safe biking facilities, and only biking facilities, in the City. With this map you'll find route comfort ratings throughout the city street and trail network indicated with High, Medium, Low, and Extremely Low comfort ratings as well as surface descriptions – i.e. whether a route is on- or off-road.

The Austin Bike Map is updated regularly by Austin Transportation staff members who plan and build the infrastructure you ride on. This ensures you'll get the most up-to-date routes and comfort ratings when planning your ride. The Austin community has made historic investments in active transportation through mobility elections in 2016, 2018 and 2020, and as those projects are completed, you can be the first to use them by using the official map. You can also pick up a free physical version of Austin's Bike Map at one of many local bike shops around town.
