Man Killed In 2-Car South Austin Wreck Identified

Patrick Leonard Ervin, 52, died after another driver sought to overtake lane he was driving on, sending both vehicles careening off-road.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX — Police on Wednesday identified the man who was killed in a two-vehicle wreck in South Austin on Sunday.

The incident occurred on May 12 at around 11:35 p.m. along the 12100 North Interstate 35 northbound service road. A preliminary police investigation shows that a tan Hyundai Elantra and a white Toyota Camry were traveling northbound on the highway when the driver of the Camry tried to take over the lane the Elantra was on. As a result, the driver of the Camry lost control of the vehicle, sending both cars careening off the roadway and causing the Elantra to slam into a tree.
The driver of the Elantra, Patrick Leonard Ervin, 52, died at the scene, while the motorist behind the wheel of the Camry was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police didn't indicate in their press advisory if the Camry driver faced any charges as a result of the fatal wreck.

The wreck marked the city's 29th fatal traffic crash of 2019, resulting in 30 fatalities so far this year. At this time in 2018, police noted, there were 22 fatal traffic crashes and 23 traffic fatalities.
