Police ID Man Killed In South Austin Collision With Barrier

Halbert Hendricks, 40, died after hitting a cement barrier as he approached South Congress Avenue on May 19.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX — Police identified the man killed after hitting a barrier in South Austin earlier this month.

The incident dates to May 19 at around 1:15 p.m. along the 2700 block of South Congress Avenue. Police said a gray, 2013 Dodge Ram was traveling eastbound on Cumberland Road approaching Congress Avenue, which ends at the latter artery with a T intersection. The driver, Halbert Hendricks, 40, continued eastbound before colliding with a cement barrier.

Hendricks was transported to South Austin Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries just after 2 p.m. Police noted he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.

Police said the incident marked Austin’s 32nd fatal traffic crash of 2019, resulting in 33 fatalities this year. At this time in 2018, there were 22 fatal traffic crashes and 23 traffic fatalities., police added.
