Anti-Gun Protest At Tomball Memorial High School Draws No Voices

An anti-gun protest advertised on theactionnetwork.org never went off, with Tomball ISD and other districts out on Spring Break

TOMBALL, TX —Thousands of high school students staged a massive walkout at schools all over the U.S. on Wednesday as part of of the National School Walkout protesting violence in the schools.

The walkouts were designed as a call to congress to enact tough laws in the wake of the latest school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida on February 14.

But students at Tomball Memorial High School, whose school was listed as a protest site on the Empower Webpage, didn't get the memo and didn't know a protest was scheduled.

On a cool Wednesday morning, student athletes in track and baseball got in a practice on the athletic fields under the watchful eyes of their coaches, while FFA and agriculture science students were taking care of livestock projects at the school's barn across the street.

"I hadn't heard anything," said Andrew Perez, a senior at Tomball Memorial High School. "I just thought they were not going to come to school, or something like that but I have not heard anything else about this."

Perez said even if he'd known about the protest, he wouldn't have attended.

"I'm not into confrontational-type stuff, I just kind of stay on my own tye of thing," he said.

Freshman Emma Van Alstin who was at the school for track practice, said she hadn't heard about the planned protest at the school either.

"I haven't heard anything," she said.

A second protest was also planned for Linkwood Park in southwest Houston, but as in the case of Tomball Memorial High School, no one showed up.

Another student protest is also planned at the Westchester Academy for International Studies in west Houston on March 21.
