Bicyclist, 80, Killed While Training For Upcoming Race: Police

Charles Raymond Turner, 80, was killed while riding his bicycle south on State Highway 36 on Sunday, when he turned into the path of an SUV.

GUY, TX — An 80-year-old man who was training for an upcoming bicycle race was killed Sunday afternoon when he was struck by an SUV, police said. The crash happened at about 1:45 p.m. in the 20500 block of State Highway 36, south of FM 1462.

Investigators said Charles Raymond Turner was riding his bicycle in the southbound lane when he decided to make a U-turn, and turned into the path of the SUV behind him.

Turner, who was wearing a helmet and other safety equipment, died at the scene. The driver of the SUV stopped and called the police and was later released, officials said.

The fatal accident closed both directions of State Highway 36 for several hours on Sunday.
Charges are not expected to be filed against the driver.
