Right now the big news is that the NFIP, National Flood Insurance Program is set to expire on July 31st- in 5 days! The house has voted to extend the program until November, but the Senate has yet to pass the bill. The major issue is that the NFIP is 16 billion, with a “b” in debt. As a result, they are trying to remap the greater Houston area for what is and isn’t considered a flood zone. If you aren’t in a flood zone, you will probably pay about $450 a year for flood insurance. If you are in a flood zone, depending on how severe you can pay up to 4x or more than that amount. Basically, the recent hurricane devastation showed how many areas that were not considered flood zones could really be impacted. Over 80% of the homes that flooded during Harvey had no flood insurance, and many people don’t know that homeowner’s insurance policies DO NOT cover flooding. If someone doesn't currently have flood insurance we definitely suggest they speak to their agent about their risk and make sure they are well protected.
