RICHMOND, TX — Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls announced today that he will not be seeking a third term as sheriff in 2020. Nehls, a 24-year law enforcement veteran, was elected sheriff in 2012 after serving two terms as Fort Bend County Pct. 4 Constable.

Nehls, who is originally from Wisconsin, said he is proud of his accomplishments since becoming sheriff, one of which he says is the 65 percent reduction in residential burglaries.

"We aim to make you feel safe and secure in your home and when traveling around Fort Bend County," he said. "We are one of the safest counties in the greater Houston area, and I am very proud of that."

Nehls said he is also proud of the county's jail education programs, and the county's efforts to give inmates a second chance when they are released back into society.

"We have to set the inmates up for success, because in my opinion the criminal justice system is broken in some areas, and I think re-entry is one of them," he said. "Let’s do something about educating them by affording them opportunities to keep them motivated and focused on the future."

Nehls added that he has a lot to be grateful during his career law enforcement career. He has not said what he plans to do next, although he mentioned in 2018 of a run for U.S. Congress when talking about border security. Still, nothing is set in stone for Fort Bend County's most popular lawman.
