Ascension Providence announces expansion of breast health program

Expansion includes new 3D mammography machines, experienced specialists and facility renovations

Ascension Providence announced the expansion of its breast health program, including updated technology, experienced physicians and staff, and facility renovations. Dr. William Turney, general surgeon at Ascension Providence, and Dr. Erin Prince, radiologist at Ascension Providence, lead the breast health program and experienced team at Ascension Providence Breast Health Center, with a focus on patient experience and quality.

Serving the community for more than 10 years, the Ascension Providence Breast Health Center saw an increase in demand for breast health services in Waco. The center performed almost 19,000 exams last fiscal year and diagnoses over 100 breast cancers annually.

“We are excited about the expansions to our breast health program and proud of the high quality breast care Ascension Providence offers to individuals right here in Waco,” said Dr. William Turney, general surgeon at Ascension Providence. “A multidisciplinary team of experienced, board certified radiologists, surgeons, pathologists and oncologists work together to provide seamless cancer care, even for high risk patients.”

Innovative care close to home

The expanded breast health program at Ascension Providence Breast Health Center is the first in Waco to offer 3D mammograms, an imaging test that combines multiple breast X-rays to create a three-dimensional picture of the breast. Three 3D mammogram machines replaced 2D imaging at the center.

Additional innovations include the replacement and expansion of ultrasound units, specimen x-ray machine, breast MRI and new program for high risk patients.

The high risk breast program at the Ascension Providence Breast Health Center was established by Dr. Prince, the only fellowship trained breast radiologist in Waco. Dr. Prince helped implement special software to help calculate lifetime risk of breast cancer.

“Patients with a high risk of breast cancer may require additional imaging and preventative measures as part of their care plan,” said Dr. Prince. “All patients at Ascension Providence Breast Health Center can expect high quality, individualized care to help ensure the best outcomes.”

Continued focus on quality

High quality care continues to be a primary focus at Ascension Providence Breast Health Center. A multidisciplinary team, called the Breast Health Conference, meets regularly to discuss each patient case both prior to and following their surgery, to identify the best care plan and follow-up for Ascension Providence Breast Health Center patients. The team consists of board certified radiologists, surgeons, pathologists and oncologists who work alongside seasoned mammography techs and certified patient navigators to help guide patients and their families every step of the way, from diagnosis through treatment.

Renovated for quality and comfort

In addition to advancements in technology and increased focus on quality, facility renovations at the Ascension Breast Health Center include expanded waiting rooms for additional patient and employee capacity, lobby updates to create a spa-like atmosphere, and an additional ultrasound unit to help reduce wait times.
